Musical commission
The ESU announces that it has commissioned Australian composer Alexander Voltz to write a new monodrama for baritone and piano to an original libretto based on the legend of Vortigern. Congratulations, Alexander!
Our hope in sponsoring this new work is that it can invigorate the contemporary culture of English-speaking peoples through a revival of Arthurian myth and reimagine the potentialities of Australian opera.

Alexander Voltz's music has been performed and supported across Australia and abroad. In 2021, he independently produced his first opera, Edward and Richard: The True Story of the Princes in the Tower. The following year, he conceived and directed The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Concert, Australia’s largest celebration of Elizabeth II in her seventieth regnant year. In 2024, his Dunrossil Elms won the Symphonic Category of the 19th George Enescu International Competition (ROM).
Since 2023, Alexander has worked as the founding Music Editor of the longstanding Australian cultural journal Quadrant. His opinion editorials on music, culture and politics have been published by Sky News Australia, The Spectator Australia, The Australian Financial Review, The Critic (UK), and others. As the National Spokesperson for the Australian Monarchist League, Alexander has appeared across national Australian media outlets, presenting the League's perspectives.
Alexander holds a Bachelor of Music (Hons I) from The University of Queensland. He has benefited from the mentorships of leading Australian composers Brenton Broadstock and Brett Dean. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Ancient History/History and Writing.
